FELUCA of XVII° Century
History: The felucas are different from boats used in Europe in XVII Century, not only for their round-shaped stern with the quarter deck-tight, applied above them, but also for their pronunced round shaped hull. They were born in 1595. Their foremast and mainmast had square sail, the mizzenmast had a latin mizzen spanker. The feluca had a higher lenght and were narrower-shaped, comparing to the old square-sail boats. They were fast ship, did not need much crew, therefore, very cheap ones. Pieter J. Lioorne-Horn (Holland) seems to be their invetor. In Germany the first feluca was built in Lubecca in 1618, the last one around 1780. As example is pointed out “ Friede” felucca, built in 1682, in the princerly dockyard of Berlin: Its lenght in straight stem was of 32 meters. “Derfflinger” feluca had two decks. To the stern were located the gallery and many rooms used for munitions, food and water storage. Below these rooms was placed the balls, mostly composed of stones. In the stern-castle there were the medium guns and the compass, which was lighted by oil lamps. The forecastle was supplied with four guns of medium size, like the ones of stern- castle and quarter deck. The stern mirror showed a warrant officer, wearing a black breast-plate armour, a navy uniform lined with red, and leather trousers. He wore a red scarf, and his black hat had red and white feathers on. The background was blue. This picture was surrounded by deep-red cloth, golden fringed. “Derfflinger” felucca up to 1684 was called “Wolkensaule” (“Cloudsrow”). It was bought in Danzica, in Jan. 1681 by Beniamin Raule and used during the war against Spain ( May 1681) declared by Prince William Frederick. The felucca was 110 feet long and 23 feet wide. It was armed with 3 to 16 guns. In 1683 it had 6 guns of two pounds and two of one pound. Its crew was of about 20 men. From 1686 to 1693 the felucca sailed the Western Africa and India. It is known that “Friedrich Wilhelm zu Pferde” had been its escort, so as the “Hoffnung” in 1691 during the trip over Westrn Africa up to Shetland Islands. Peculiar feature of this kit:
