It has been launched in 1719 at Portmouth . It was the third ship with
this name , obtained by the risult of a previously demolished ship. Infact at
that time ,all usable material was used again.
The first Royal William , had been
nearly all built , by using elements salvaged from “ Price” vessel
demolition. Royal William had been a
remarkable ship in those days , we have evidence of six shipyard models , in
Museums and privare collections.
It was enrolled as first rank vessel , with the following
characteristics :

Width: mt. 12,80

6,10
Displacement:
Tons 1600

First battery N° 34 guns of 32 inches
Second battery N° 28 guns of 24 inches
Third battery N° 18 guns of 8 inches
The crew’ number was of 730 mens.
In 1782 “Royal William” took part in the navy operations which led
to Gibraltar’s liberation , and cooperated to the salvage attempt of Royal
George vessel , which , in that year , overturned in Spithead causing the
death of 900 persons.
In the end it was assigned as anchor-watch at Portsmouth , until 1813 ,
then demolished.
The ship’s conditions were still exceptional , though such a long
career.
In fact “The Naval Chronicle” of 1799 said:
“His temerable ship would have been demolished long ago , if the
King’s desire was contrary to it. The crew use call it “The Old Billy”.
